In Too Deep + Excerpt

Clean Teen Publishing is excited to bring you In Too Deep, the second book in the #Hacker Series by Sherry D. Ficklin.

One talented hacker.
One dead body.
One explosive secret.
When one reckless night leads Farris Barnett to the dead body of a classmate, she's as willing as everyone else to write it off as a suicide. That is, until cryptic messages start coming in from someone who knows the truth, and they want Farris on the case. Putting her hacker skills to work, she begins to unravel the life of a victim who might just have been the guiltiest of them all.
Her personal life in turmoil, Farris turns to the only person she can trust to help her get to the bottom of things—a friend on the verge of becoming much more. Together, they confront a killer with a secret not even she could have decoded.
The biggest bombs, the ones that do the most damage, are the ones you never see coming.

Beside me, Cole is quiet, his free hand casually stuffed in his jean pocket, like he isn’t standing fifty feet over the crashing ocean, perched on the edge of a railing along the pier. He isn’t looking at me, but his square chin is turned up, his gaze on the stars just becoming visible in the sky. He’s waiting for me to say something, or that’s what it feels like, but there are no words for what’s churning inside me now. Just a wash of grief and fear, mixed with a deep gratitude, all jumbled up inside.
Mom is buried back in her hometown of Charleston, so I can’t even go visit her grave. Dad’s off in Turkey doing training exercises with his squadron, which leaves me here, alone. Well, I glance over at Cole. Not quite alone.
I squeeze his hand, and he looks down at me.
“You scared, Farris?” he asks, a hint of challenge in his voice.
I frown, fighting back my near panic. “Not really.”
He raises an eyebrow. “Oh?”
“Terrified is more accurate,” I admit. “But that’s the point, right?”
“Hey, it’s your party; I’m just here for the cupcakes.”
I should chuckle, but I don’t. Instead, I look down at my dark blue Converse and the black water below. The tide is high—I’d been careful to make sure of that. I’d done the math carefully, making sure there were no unnecessary risks tonight. I’m not looking to kill myself, after all. Just to push myself. To conquer the fear I’ve been holding onto for far too long. My mother always said it was only in overcoming our fears that we could find our true selves. I really hope she was right because at this moment, I feel like I have no idea who I am anymore. It isn’t just missing Ollie and Mom that’s taking its toll on me; it’s looking down the road at college and being on my own—really on my own—for the first time.
It’s enough to make any girl want to jump off a bridge.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve had this nightmare where I’m drowning. I don’t think it’s ever going to go away, but maybe, just maybe, this will help. Freud says drowning in dreams is an internal struggle against yourself—a need to break free or come clean.
I fit into all those categories.
All this psychosis in a fun, candy shell.
Pushing back the thoughts, I clear my mind, focusing on the feel of Cole’s hand in mine, on the small, steady beat of his pulse that I can feel in his fingers. I let it calm me, focusing on it until everything else feels distant.
“On the count of three?” I ask.
Cole nods. “One,” he says. “Two.”
In unison, we bend our knees and yell, “Three!”
We leap, the cold sea air cradling us for only a heartbeat before plunging us into the swirling darkness below.
