After Burn is a fantastic young adult/mystery novel about a military brat named Reece Barnett. If you are familiar with Sherry Ficklin’s work then you know she is a former military brat. It’s clear she used her knowledge and experience of living on various military bases to write this book. Let’s face it there’s nothing more frustrating than finding “fact” errors in a book. You won’t find any in After Burn.
Sixteen year old Reece just moved to a new military base. She’s faced with making new friends, navigating a new school and adjusting to life since her mom passed away. She quickly makes new friends and finds herself as the love interest to two rival guys. While settling into her new life the base gets several bomb threats. Reece, who is curious by nature, starts investigating on her own. All the characters in the book are well developed. Reece is a strong, sassy girl who never loses sight of who she is or folds under pressure.
After Burn never lost my attention or dragged on. I appreciated the depth and range of characters. This is a great book for young adults, adults and anyone who’s ever lived the life of a military brat. I give this book five out of five donuts.
